Hooks with D'Ann Lindun

© Hisoka_photo | Stock Free Images

You know, those little barbs that get into your skin and won’t let go.

I was about seven years old the first time I ever encountered Cholla cactus. My family and I had just moved to Phoenix, Arizona, for our first winter there. My mother, sisters and I took a walk. I spotted a pale green chunk of cacti with little white spikes. I was infatuated with the desert flora and bent to pick it up. Instantly, hundreds of little spines embedded themselves in my palms. The more I writhed, the more it dug in.

Hours later, in an emergency room, the last thorn came out.

Not exactly the same thing, but a book hook sinks in and won’t let you go.

I would like to hear what you think of my hooks from my connected books.

From A Cowboy to Keep: For a moment, seventy-five considered her, his eyes narrow and mean. Skin on fire, Laney faced him, eyeball to eyeball. She stood motionless, holding the hot-shot like a lance, daring him to come for her. Time stood still as they faced off. She could smell her own fear over the manure on her hands and knees as the Angus mulled over his options. He pawed with both front hooves and tossed his head. Red slobber flew through the air.

Blood. Wyatt’s blood. Oh, God.

Laney tensed, ready to jump away. Just as she thought the Angus would come for her, Wyatt moaned. Like a child with a toy car, the bull dropped his head and shoved the man into the rail fence. The logs shook as Wyatt’s body slammed into them.

Screaming nonsensical words, Laney chased the bull and hit him again with her prod. Shaking his head as if she were nothing more than a gnat, he repeatedly slammed Wyatt into the fence.

Desperation clouded her mind, but Laney tried to think. The prod was only making the bull madder. She waved at him. “Look at me!”

When the mighty Angus glanced her direction, she ran at him and slapped his nose with her bare hand then danced back a few steps. He pawed with both front feet, filling the air with dirt. Laney’s eyes stung, but she refused to blink.

"Come on, come on." She waved her arms, daring the animal to charge. Her heart pumped so fast she couldn’t tell the beats apart. She had to get him away from Wyatt. Now. "You dirty, filthy beast. Try to get me."

Like a Mexican bullfighter, she leaped forward and poked his nose with her prod. Enraged, the bull lunged forward. Turning and running, with him hot on her heels, she sped into a small holding pen and catapulted over the back fence. Tearing around the backside, she slammed the gate shut and threw the latch. She dropped the hot-shot and ran for Wyatt, screaming his name.

Laney fell to her knees beside him and tugged him over. "Oh, God, Wyatt. Don’t you dare die on me.”

From Sunny Days Ahead: Weak as a newborn lamb, Sunny Jamieson struggled into her two-sizes-too-small coat and work gloves and wrapped a red plaid scarf around her head. She’d been in labor for more than twelve hours, and her pains ought to be getting stronger, but they seemed to be staying level at about ten minutes apart. To make matters worse, the boys could barely get out of bed, both sick with the flu. But she had hungry horses and a cow in the barn. If she didn’t feed them, no one would.

Damn all men to hell anyway.

She smoothed the hair away from the boys’ warm foreheads. Both were still feverish. This had gone on way too long. When she came back inside she’d try to find a way to get to the hospital. The phone had been off for hours—the storm knocked it out—and the truck was too squirrely to drive on icy roads.

The baby was coming early in the middle of an ice storm that had her isolated on her ranch.

With one last look at her precious boys, she went out and closed the door behind her.

If she weren’t careful, Family Services would take the boys away from her. She couldn’t let that happen. She had to figure something out, fast. Later. Right now, she had to feed the hungry animals.

Taking care not to fall, she held on to the railing and maneuvered her bulk down the snow-slickened steps. Every inch was torture as labor pains burned through her back. Step by step, she slogged her way across the snow-covered barnyard. Dragging herself to the barn took all her considerable willpower.

Freezing wind blew snow down from the peaks, across the valley floor, and into her face as she fought to pull open the barn door. Her scarf came loose and flapped around her neck while she struggled to budge the heavy double doors. An extra fierce gust of wind caught the bright red material and hurled it across the yard. In too much pain to care, she watched it go with listless eyes.

Her long blonde hair whipped across her face, and she shoved it away with a shaking hand. The angry November wind took advantage of her and hurled the half open barn door against her shoulder, sending her spinning like a top. Throwing her hands out to protect her belly, she left her head exposed and it slammed into the frozen ground like a hammer to a horseshoe.

Blurb: When Laney Ellis’ husband is killed by a bull, she is left alone to run their small cattle ranch and raise their son, Justin, on her own. One thing she is determined her son will never do is ride rodeo bulls. But that is the dream Justin holds dearest—to be exactly like his dad, the onetime Colorado State High School Rodeo Champion.

After his rodeo career peaks and begins to slide, Cody Utah opens a bull riding school. Although attracted to his next door neighbor, he steers clear. Cody has heard rumors Laney trapped her husband into marriage by getting pregnant in high school. The last thing Cody wants is children. His mother was a drunk, and he doesn’t know who his father is.

A bull's hooves turned Laney’s world to dust; bull riding gave Cody a life worth living—can they find common ground?

Blurb: Sunny Jamieson craves a normal family so much she has gotten pregnant by the wrong man—twice. Neither was the man she thought he was, and she is alone and about to give birth in an ice storm.

Garrett Pike wants nothing more than to have a boy of his own to follow in his footsteps. When he returns home from the rodeo circuit and finds his wife in bed with a ranch hand, he needs to distance himself from his angry memories and accepts a job offer in Black Mountain, Colorado. On the way, his truck breaks down in a blizzard, landing him at the home of a pregnant woman and her kids.

Garrett and Sunny bond when she gives birth. Garrett realizes he doesn’t have to be the biological father of a child to love one, and Sunny knows she’s found the man she’s been seeking. Together, they can create the family they’ve both been longing for.

Author Bio: Falling in love with romance novels the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She was hooked! She began writing and never looked back. Romance appeals to her because there's just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to have a happy ending. D’Ann’s particular favorites usually feature cowboys and the women who love them. This is probably because she draws inspiration from the area where she lives, Western Colorado, her husband of twenty-nine years and their daughter. Composites of their small farm, herd of horses, five Australian shepherds, a Queensland heeler, nine ducks and cats of every shape and color often show up in her stories!

Guest Post wih Daryl Devore

I'm happy to have my good friend, author Daryl Devore, on my blog today. She's celebrating her fourth release, Capri's Fate. A huge congratulations to you, Daryl, and I'm still in love with the cover. :)

So can you tell us a bit about Capri's Fate in your own words?

Daryl: Capri's Fate is my fourth book. It's an erotic contemporary fantasy. I've been dabbling in various sub genres of erotic romance and decided to try my hand at a fantasy.

This was an interesting and fun book to write. I had to research private jets and private luxury yachts. I found one private jet that had glass panels in the floor so the passengers can watch the ground underneath them. The most interesting thing I researched had to be Komodo dragons.

I'm a planster. I plot out parts of my book, but the characters tend to going off in their own directions. I broke a writing rule in this book. Blame it on my characters. I tried to correct it, but they were stubborn, so I left it that way.

Blurb: Corporate business woman, Capricious Gray, is dragged to a sex toy convention by her best friend. Once a shocking, mysterious disembodied voice helps her with her purchases, it follows her home. Passion ensues, leaving Capri torn between lust for her fantasy lover and the desperate need for reality in her life.

Thall, the seven hundred and sixteenth child of one of the Fates, harbors the irrepressible need to be with the woman he's desired from afar for years. In order to make her his, once and for all, he must help Capri get past her fears, including the fear of what he represents - a fantasy.

Can fantasy become a reality for these two lovers?

Review: I'll start by saying, I'm not the biggest erotic reader, but I had to give this one a try. Call me biased since I had an advanced reading of this one, but I actually really enjoyed it.

I thought Capri's Fate was an adventurous, light hearted read peppered with dashes of humor and sexy intimate scenes.

Something I really like about Ms. Devore is her way with changing the mood while I'm reading her books. Not going to lie, when I initially started chapter one, I thought "oh dear, what am I about to read?" Then, of course, as I continued to read, the mood shifted and the romance sprang to life.

I'll also confess I'm not exactly a person that roots for the characters to get down to business, but yeah, I totally did in this book. Poor Capri and Thall, at points, I began to wonder if they might never obtain their "happy" times.

All in all, I thought this was a quick, light read that had a nice dose of adventure in some exotic locations, some steamy scenes, and a cute happily ever after.

Capri's Fate is available now at: Amazon

For twenty years, Avant plotted revenge against the dark king, but when a mysterious woman suddenly appears, everything changes. Although his prophetic Gift reveals she's the Seed of Light chosen to restore the Crown, his overwhelming attraction to the women threatens his long-held plan for revenge and two decades of fidelity.

Abby Randall is inexplicably transported from Dallas to the medieval land of Jastain. There she meets Avant, who claims she's the foretold champion of his people. Through his supernatural Gift, Avant transplants his memories into her, but neither are prepared for how their hearts intertwine.

Together they embark on their quest, but when Abby and Avant come face to face with destiny, will they sacrifice what matters most to provide a happily-ever-after for the people of Jastain?

Available for purchase atAmazon

Excerpt: "When Avant climbed back to the cave, his hair was wet. He'd slicked it back from his face and tied it into a little ponytail with a leather string. The sexy shadow of a light beard softened his angular jaw, and the thick waves of his hair shined with chestnut highlights in the morning sun. It was a good look for him, but then again, what wasn’t? Abby ran her fingers through her own tangled tresses and pulled her hair back. What she wouldn't give for a hairclip.

“Would you like a thong for your hair?”

She giggled at the word thong, certain that what she pictured was not what he referenced. “Do you have an extra one? I’d like to get it out of my face, and I don’t have anything.” Actually she had her own thong, but she sure as hell wasn't putting it in her hair.

He immediately unlaced the tie at the neck of his shirt and handed it to her.

She gasped and put a hand to her face to hide the heat in her cheeks as his shirt fell open below his breast bone. “You don’t have to do that."

Her blood coursed wildly at the sight of the smooth muscles of his chest. A soft sprinkling of dark hair beckoned her fingers. She swallowed hard.

“It’s all right. Please use it. It will be a hard day’s journey with hair in your face.” His words rang in her mind so sincerely she forgot her embarrassment, but her eyes kept flitting to his heavenly chest.

“Thank you, Avant, and not only for the lace but for everything you're doing to help me.”

Holding her gaze, he nodded once, and her heart fluttered. Was it getting warm in the cave? She wiped the beads of sweat from her forehead.

“It is time to be off if we are to make it to the next shelter before nightfall.” He picked up his pack and walked to the mouth of the cave. She grabbed her bag and followed.

Climbing down proved to be more difficult than going up. The muscles required to lower herself from one level to the next worked her thighs and butt like no gym equipment she'd ever experienced. It was like doing hours of squats. She trudged down the mountain with the previous day's tumult weighting her down like the “freshman ten.” Avant helped her along on the steeper steps, but, for the most part, she made them on her own, clippity-clopping in those damned Docinis all the way.

When he reached the bottom, he disappeared around an outcropping. Abby took the last little step to the base and hurried after him. As she turned the corner, Avant grabbed her arm and spun her around. Driving her back against the rock, he pressed the length of his rigid body against her. His face, barely three inches from hers, clenched in thin lines of stress. Her heart raced…with fear.

She was pretty sure it was fear.

Cheryl Yeko's A Man to Trust Book Blitz

Blurb: The battered survivor of an abusive marriage, Angela doesn’t mourn her husband’s death in a drug deal gone bad. But she’s not sure she can survive losing her heart to the handsome detective who believes she’s a criminal, too.

Tasked with Angela’s safety after she’s targeted by an unknown enemy, Jake discovers the beautiful widow is not what she seems. He soon realizes that trusting her goes hand-in-hand with desiring her, and passion and duty collide.

Now it’s up to Jake to keep Angela—and their chance at happiness—alive.

Excerpt: Jake walked around and opened Angela’s door. He squatted next to her and shook her gently to wake her. She gave a moan of protest, then her eyes fluttered open.

For a moment, he lost himself in her warm emerald gaze. She smiled at him. “Jake,” she murmured.

He returned her smile, unable to resist the need to cup her sweet face in his hand and brush his lips across hers. “We’re here, babe.”

He knew the moment she recalled the night’s events. The moment she remembered he was an ass. Her gaze turned icy.

Exclusive excerpt of Sheri Fredrick's Trolly Yours (+Giveaway)

I'm pleased to share an unedited excerpt from author Sheri Fredrick's upcoming book, Trolly Yours. Here's another release I've been anxiously awaiting. And yes, Alek is also on the "list". :)

This will be Book 2 in The Centaurs Series. The release date has not been set yet, but I can tell you it won't be long now!

As a treat, I'll also be offering one lucky commenter a digital copy of the first book in the series, Remedy Maker. More details after the excerpt.

Excerpt: "“Ella.” Al moved the tray of uneaten food to the floor, out of the way. He would have taken her rosé, but she wasn’t giving it up. “You are none of those things, and far from it. What your parents do to you is abusive. Do you understand that?”

When she continued to stare into her wine glass, watching the ceiling’s glow stones turn red in the shifting liquid, Al took her free hand and squeezed, giving it a shake until she looked at him. Sympathetic concern etched lines between his dark, expressive eyes.

He leaned in and tucked a stray lock of hair behind her pointed ear. “You are beautiful to me.” At the roll of her eyes, he pressed her hand a little harder. “Stop it. If you could only see yourself as I see you. You started your own successful business—you did it because you’re smart.”

She watched as his gaze traveled from her wild red hair, over her pudgy, shirt-covered body, to her thick bare legs. Desire shone in his chocolaty depths, warming her cheeks and tingling the spot where they’d connected earlier.

“You have a gorgeous, mouth-watering body. If I made love to you every day for the next century and a half, I’d never tire of you.”

“It’s Aleksander.”

Ella sighed and acquiesced. “Aleksander, more than anything, I want to believe you. But it isn’t easy.” When she tugged her hand, he let go, and she clasped her fingers in her lap. “This morning, I was on my way to meet a landlord who has nests for rent. That’s when the hunter caught me off guard. I lost my purse, my—”

“No you didn’t. I found everything where you dropped them. That giant bag of yours and the notebook are safe. I’ll get them for you when we leave.”

Immediate relief spilled over, washing away her sense of dread. Al must have sensed her instant mood change because he opened his arms and Ella dove into them. She relished his warm bare chest and the security she felt. While held in his muscular arms, nothing bad could ever touch her. Beneath her cheek the beating of his heart syncopated her pulse to his, and she closed her eyes.

Aleksander’s arms tensed a split-second before a male voice came from the open doorway.

“My, my. Isn’t this a cozy scene?”

Unhurried, Alek straightened the tangled blanket beneath his hocks and casually covered Ella’s bare legs. He didn’t want any other male eyes to touch his honey-Troll. She tried to sit up so they weren’t breast to chest, but he tightened his arm that wrapped her shoulders, preventing little more than her head to swivel.

“We were until you showed up.” Alek gave the older male a lopsided grin. “How’s it shakin’, Nubbs?”

Nubbs didn’t look happy. The man looked all businesslike and determined, “coolness under pressure” bottled up and ready to explode. Oh no, he didn’t look happy at all.

Aleksander didn’t blame him. He wasn’t damn happy with the situation, either. Lifting the wineglass, he went to take a sip, but he’d already drained it dry.

Plastered against his chest, Ella managed to slowly lower her glass. Her breath quickened. She was probably scared; her wide eyes never left Nubbs’ face.

Nubbs wore a burnt orange dress shirt, collar wide-spread with the first button open, tucked into a pair of charcoal grey dress slacks. His feet were stuffed into what looked liked lizard lace-up shoes. The two-legged Centaur looked very chic…and lethal, even in the safe house.

In control as always, cold and calculating, Alek noted; dangerous, hard, and unforgiving.

Life had not been easy for Nubbs.

“You didn’t hear the bolt slide?” Beneath the neatly parted dark blond hair, his ice-blue gaze flicked over their unfinished meal. “You’re losing your touch, Alek.”

“Didn’t think I needed the Beretta. Besides, I was a bit…preoccupied."

Damn! Two legged or not, he should have heard the front door open. Mistakes like that caused major FUBAR results.

Nubbs took in Ella’s disheveled appearance, the color riding high on her cheeks, the bra hanging by a strap off a dresser knob. His chiseled features relaxed and he chuckled. “I guess you’re safe enough.” Then his gaze skimmed the length of Ella’s gracefully curved spine. “Maybe not. Come out here and talk to me."

When the door latch clicked shut, Ella released a breath. “I take it that’s the friend who owns this place?”

Alek pushed the blanket back and helped her to sit up. “Yes, he’s someone I work with. I’ll see what he wants. Get dressed and meet me out there when you’re ready.” "

***In the event you haven't checked out Remedy Maker where we first met Alek, here is a chance to win the first in the series. Just leave me a comment with your email address so I can contact you! :)  ***

Margo Hoornstra's Night Stars and Morning Doves Book Blitz (+Freebie)

Between April 9th through April 13th, Margo is offering Night Stars and Morning Doves for free on Amazon. Be sure to grab your copy! :)

Blurb: Elyse Monroe may be her sister's maid of honor, but that doesn't mean she has to follow the bride's example and fall in love. Battle-scarred and weary from previous relationships, she has no desire to take a chance on another--no matter how many hints her little sister drops about the best man.

Devastating life events have taken a toll on Eric Matthews. After losing his wife and unborn daughter, he's come home to heal. Serving as best man at his kid brother's wedding is the only relationship he cares to contemplate--no matter how attractive the maid of honor.

Thrown together again and again by wedding duties, Elyse and Eric reluctantly agree to explore a possible relationship--only to have their casual date turn into a glorious night of passion. Can two hearts, convinced a happily ever after will never happen, recognize love when it finds them?

Excerpt: “Remodeling your home to accommodate Jay and me. Isn’t that a little extreme?”

Lips pursed, he shook his head. “Your mother and I have talked about adding on for years. Anyway, whatever we put into this house should increase its value eventually.” Setting aside the paper once and for all, his expression mellowed as he regarded his son. “Helping you out is helping us out.”

“It’s nice to hear you say that. And I want you to know I do appreciate what you’re doing for us. Especially Jay.”

“Losing your mother at any age is tough,” he replied as he stood. “It’s gotta be especially devastating when you’re as young as my grandson. He still needs someone to care for him like a mother, and Iris is more than up to the task.”

“She is that,” Eric began, then made himself quit talking.

Hard to admit, but he wanted someone to care for him, or at least listen when he needed them to. It wasn’t easy to look for a woman when you’re mortally injured and still require time to heal. Right now, it seemed all the time in the world would never make him whole again.

Author Bio: My personal history in a nutshell is pretty simple. I’m a wife to one; mother to four—seven if you count in-law children which I do—and grandmother to four so far.

My work experience includes public relations specialist, magazine editor, television producer, and script and speech writer. I’m also a founding member of Mid-Michigan Romance Writers of America.

An exclusive excerpt from Brenda Dyer's Prophecy's Child (+Giveaway)

I'm tickled to share an unedited excerpt of author Brenda Dyer's upcoming release, Prophecy's Child. I've been anxiously awaiting this second book in The Prophecy Series. I can't wait to read Kal's story. Just so you know, he's on the "list".

The release date has not been set yet, but I'll be sure to let you know when it's announced. Won't be long now, boys and girls!

And because I enjoyed Love's Prophecy so much, I've decided to add a giveaway. :) More details after the excerpt.

Excerpt: "Kal rummaged through the drawers in his bathroom, frantically searching for a condom.

“Shit and fuck,” he mumbled under his breath. “I know there’s a box somewhere.” He yanked open the cabinet under the sink and shoved aside towels, toilet paper and other crap.

Relief filled him. “Thank all that’s holy.” He seized a small blue box and ripped off the lid. Two foil-wrapped condoms slid along the bottom.

Grabbing one, he darted back into the bedroom, but stopped the moment he saw Katherine.

She’d wrapped the blue comforter around her delicious body, and a scowl scrunched her brow. Once again, anger radiated from her.

Damnit! Did she regret their actions already? He’d been in the John for four—maybe five seconds. How could she have changed her mind so fast?

Anger and disappointment surged through him, mixing with lust.

He tried to rein in his raw emotions, but his cock aching like an abscessed tooth, made it impossible to get a handle on them. Swearing none to quietly, he shoved a trembling hand through his hair and stared back at her. “Regretting our lovemaking already?"

Her eyes narrowed, but she didn’t reply.

He widened his stance and folded his arms. “Don’t bother telling me you didn’t enjoy what happened a moment ago because I know better.” He licked his lips; the taste of her sweetness made his erection twitch painfully. “I can still taste how much you…took pleasure in it.”

Katherine’s cheeks turned as pink as the roses in the room, but her brown eyes stayed fixed on him. “I’m not denying I…enjoyed what happened. That’s not why I’m pissed off.”

“Care to fill me in?”

Like a queen addressing her court, Katherine looked down her nose at him and said in voice filled with ice, “Can you explain to me why you have a tattoo of me naked on your back for the entire world to see?”

The tattoo. Shit, he’d forgotten about it. He smiled and relaxed his posture.

She marched over to him with the ends of the comforter balled in her fists. “This isn’t funny.”

He fought to hide his grin, but instead he chuckled. “The entire world? Sure, I have a killer body.” He flexed, making his pecs jerk and dance, then he flexed both biceps. “And I have massive guns.” He winked at her “But I do like to wear clothes sometimes—it gets pretty cold, ya know.”

Her head dipped, but not before he saw her smile. “Will you be serious, please?”

“Okay.” Was he really going to let her know what a pathetic geek he was?

“Have a seat.” He guided her back to the bed with a hand on the small of her back.

Katherine eyed him warily before sitting. The comforter parted, reveling one of her long legs. His gaze traveled up the creaming expanse of flesh and muscle to her thigh.

She cleared her throat and flipped the blanket over her bare limb.

The pressure in his pants increased, and his body vibrated with sexual hunger and bloodlust.

He’d come so close earlier to biting her, but he wrestled that urge until he got it under control. But it was back with a vengeance.

Needing space, he shoved the condom into the pocket of his jeans and moved to the dresser. In the top drawer, he rummaged through boxer shorts and socks until he found the picture. He brought it over to the bed and handed it her. While she gazed at the framed photo, he sat next to her. Her natural lemony scent mixed with her strawberry perfume or lotion, and under that he caught the sweet bouquet of her arousal.

All combined, adding more temptation to his already battered willpower.

He sighed then focused his mind on the night he’d taken the picture. “Do you remember the night I took this photo?”

She nodded, but a wall of long hair blocked his view of her face.

He rested his chin on her shoulder and looked at the picture. Over the years he’d memorized every detail. But the one that stood out was the look of untainted love in her eyes. “It was the first time you said you loved me.”

“I remember,” she whispered. She traced the gilded frame with a finger. “We’d just made love. And I told you I loved you.” She chuckled. “Your response was to jump up and take a picture. Not the response I was looking for.”

“I had to capture the moment.” He leaned back, holding himself up with his hands. “Besides, I said and showed you how much I loved you after that.”

Katherine set the photo against her knees and glanced his way. Her warm brown eyes sent his heart crashing against his ribs. “Yes, you did. Many times.”

“Do you know why I had to take that picture?”

“Not really.”

“Because I wanted to freeze time and stay in that moment forever.” He picked up the picture. “When you said you loved me, I’d never been happier or felt more alive.” He stroked the line of her cheek in the photo. “Or filled with such gut-churning guilt.”

She gasped. “Guilt? Why?”

Kal glanced at her. Unshed tears sparkled behind her lashes, and she chewed her plump bottom lip. “Do you have any idea how perfect you are?”

“I’m not perfect—believe me.”

“Yes, you are. You’re perfect and oh so achingly beautiful.” With the forefinger of his right hand, he caressed her brow, her cheek, then drew a line around her lips. “And it’s not just your face or your body. It’s your heart and soul."

Tears spilled down her cheeks, and she sucked in a ragged breath.

“You gave me the two most precious gifts a woman can give a man: her innocence and love. And I couldn’t even give you the truth.”

He trailed his finger through her tears. “God knows, I wanted to tell you the truth—I tried numerous times—but I was scared the love I saw in your eyes would turn to horror and hatred.”

Katherine laced her fingers with his and then held his hand against her chest.

Silence filled the space between them. While Kal studied her facial expressions, he could’ve sworn he saw love in her eyes before her lids lowered. “If I could go back, I’d tell you everything and I’d never let you go.”

“I wish we could change things, but we can’t.” she whispered.

He wanted to get down on his knees and beg her for forgiveness. The urgent need to hear her say she loved him and that she wanted them to start anew blindsided him.

But he’d already opened his soul to her, leaving himself exposed and vulnerable. He doubted he could survive another rejection. Besides, he didn’t want to push her into making a snap decision. If this was going to work out between them, she needed space to make up her mind.

He looked back at the picture balanced on his lap, trying to get his emotions under wraps. “Anyway, you wanted to know the whys behind the tattoo.”

She gave him a watery smile. “Yes, I do.”

“After I left you, I was destroyed. I could hardly function. The only thing that kept me upright was the thought you were better off without me. But really, that was cold comfort.”

He lifted the lid off the locked vault in his mind and memories and feelings rushed out. His heart ached with the force of emotions threatening to drown him with their turbulent force.

For over a year, he mourned Katherine’s loss, focusing all his attention on learning his job of killing demons. Slowly, he came back to life. Or did he? Now that he thought about it, all he did was crack jokes, drink himself stupid, and sleep with woman after woman, nameless face after nameless face to try and prove he was over Katherine.

Jesus. He’d never gotten over her, just learned how to cope with the help of many different devices.

Heat crept up his neck and flowed over his face. That crap he’d keep locked away.

“All I had left was the memories of our time together and this picture.” Again he touched the glossy cheek covered by glass. “Every dawn when I went to bed, I’d look at this picture and think of you out there somewhere. A part of me hoped you’d found love and were happy, yet another part wanted to kill any male who dared touch you.”

He chanced a peek at her. Katherine’s brow crinkled with deep concentration. “Man, sometimes I thought I was a nut-job ‘cause I’d carry on conversations with this picture. I’d yap about my life, music, movies I’d seen and liked. But mostly, I talked about how much I loved and missed you.”

Okay, you’re making yourself look and sound like a pitiful loser.

“Kal…I don’t know what to say…”

“You don’t need to say anything. I’m telling you all this because you deserve to know.”

She leaned her head against his shoulder, and he placed an arm around her, pulling her close to his side. Her nearness calmed his jumpy nerves.

“So, onto how you ended up on my back. Even though we couldn’t be together physically, I wanted to have you with me all the time. I couldn’t carry around the photo because I was worried I’d lose it, so I decided to get a tattoo. See, now not only were you in my heart, but also etched into my skin. You’d be with me forever.”

He smiled into her upturned face. “Pretty pathetic, huh?”

Her eyes swam with tears. “No, not pathetic at all.” With their gazes locked, she unwound the quilt from her delectable body.

Good God in Heaven. Her naked beauty froze his tongue to the roof of his mouth. Her breasts were creamy mounds topped with rosy tight nipples. Pale smooth skin stretched over her toned frame begged him to touch, taste, explore. Indented waist, flat stomach, and long legs he wanted locked around him as he pounded into her.

She laid her hand on his chest and gently pushed him back on the bed, then she straddled his hips. Her black hair fell around them as she leaned down. “Did you find a condom?” she asked against his lips.

Tongue still stuck to the roof of his mouth, he could only nod. And like a complete idiot, he pulled out the condom and showed it to her.

She laughed. “Good.” "

[Insert Clever Quip Here] has a birthday!

This month, my blog is turning 1! Aww, I know. They're still cute when they're little, right? It's when they get old and mean that you want to pop them in the face. I digress.

So basically, I have to extend a huge thank you to all the readers, bloggers, and authors that have followed me over the past year. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the support. So, as a result, I've decided to come up with some sort of giveaway as a 'thank you'. Within the week, I'll be setting up a rafflecopter that will feature multiple prizes from books (print and digital) to gift cards. Perhaps, I might even throw a couple cutesy things in there as well. You'll have to wait and see.

More to come, boys and girls! (Ha, mainly girls, I'm sure.) I hope you'll come celebrate with me. :)

Review of Rebecca Zanetti's Against the Wall (+Giveaway)

Blurb: Never challenge a cowboy in the courtroom…

Surveying the proposed site for a high-end golf course should have been a breeze for spunky Landscape Architect Sophie Smith. But when this born-and-bred city girl is suddenly—and quite literally—swept off her feet by a sexy cowboy on horseback, she realizes that the country life has some serious (and seriously steamy!) possibilities. That is, until she finds out exactly who her smokin’-hot wrangler really is.

Cowboy and Tribal lawyer Jake Lodge is desperately trying to block the development. And if that means playing hardball—and being every inch the shark lawyer—so be it. But Sophie is a distraction he didn’t expect. A distraction that makes his blood burn. Two different worlds.

Two opposing sides. And when they finally give into the exquisite temptation, the consequences will shake the foundations of both of their lives…

Review: We'll just go ahead and make this one simple.

You can attribute three words to this name: Indian, Cowboy, Lawyer. I mean, come on. Enough said, right?

Alright, alright, I suppose I'll actually leave a review versus a new fictional crush to add to my list. Yes, I actually have one. Hey, some people knit. I make lists of fictional heroes I would marry. *shrugs*

Personally, I really enjoyed Rebecca Zanetti's Dark Protectors Series. She definitely knows how to write a swoon-worthy alpha hero. I was intrigued to read Against the Wall just to see how she might write her contemporary hero compared to her vampires and shifters. I wasn't doubtful per se, but I tend to start reading a book with low expectations. Nothing really irritates me more when a book is hyped up, then I read it and feel a bit "meh" afterward.

Well, rest assured, I thought Against the Wall was a great, fast read with wonderful characters. It's not full of angst, action, or evil. It's simply a sweet small town read with a meddlesome community that will make you smile and memorable characters.

And that leads me back to Jake, our hero. I just can't say enough how much I really loved this fictional guy. He encompasses many of the characteristics I want in my heroes. He's a devoted family man, knows what he wants, takes care of his lady, protective, and just the right amount of alpha that he didn't cross the threshold into the "ass" territory. Oh yeah, and his "fluff and stuff" moves.. can't forget those.

Now we have our heroine, Sophie. She's not a weakling, but she has just the right blend of sweetness and spunk. It's easy to understand why she's a bit skeptical of her relationship with Jake. Truly, the woman needed a strong man that would offer her a lasting, one of a kind love. And how fortunate our hero is just the man for the job.

Overall, I thought this was an enjoyable, fast, sweet read with a great cast of characters. I'm more than interested to read about Jake's brothers and sister.
