BLOOD BOUND Excerpt Blast November 30th 2012

What my eyes finally settled on was as curious as it was unexpected. There was a man, a male vampire. He was about six-six. Straight, long dark hair pulled back in a ponytail with jade green eyes and a fierce snarl ripping from his throat. He was not moving forward, but he was also not dropping his attack stance. He looked as if he would’ve happily destroyed me but of all peculiar things, it seemed he wanted to kill me over having drunk from Declán? Lost! My poor brain was so broken . . .
“Who the hell are you and what do you mean attacking me in my territory? I would suggest you be very careful with your answer if you plan to still be in existence this time tomorrow.” I could hear the seething blood rage in my voice again but couldn’t seem to care right then. He was attacking us, trying to take me away from Declán! Somewhere in the deepest recesses of my mind I noted his eyes yet that detail only made this all the more confusing.
“You’re feeding on a Guardian! Are you insane?” The stranger’s voice was seething with nearly as much venom as mine for some strange reason. Most that know Declán was a Guardian – a natural born vampire hunter – also referred to him as my human mate . . . Why should he care what we were doing? Of course, I was still not sure why Declán had done that in the first place – cheating!
     “Possibly,” I mused.

Author Jenna Jaxon and her "Colorful" Guest Post

A Rainbow of Safety
In a world where safe sex is touted as loudly as any other safety precaution, makers of condoms have come up with some novel ideas to help spice up your sex life and make safe sex as fun and appealing as possible.

The hero of my current erotic romance novella, 7 Days of Seduction, Hunter Hopewell, is a strong advocate of novelty and variety in his sexual practices.  But he’s also a safety guy.  So one of his signature practices is to use colorful condoms during his seven-day seduction of the book’s heroine, Ashley.

Condoms can come in every color under the sun.  Major condom manufacturers, like Lifestyles, Crown, and Durex, offer standard Green, Yellow, Blue, and Red.  Some offer in addition Orange, Black, Purple and one company offers a Tri-Color condom in Red, White, and Blue for those patriotic folks.

Elizabeth Bodsky, a writer, researcher and health educator on sexually transmitted diseases, warns that users need to make sure that the colored condoms they intend to use are designed for the purpose of safe sex and are not just a novelty item.  But once that is established, colored condoms can be “a fun way to spice up your sex life.”

A variation on the colored condom--which also makes an appearance in 7 Days--is the glow-in-the-dark condom.  Another novelty, this condom is as effective as any other latex condom, but with the “added fun of making the penis extremely bright and visible during sex,” according to Condomania.  Ashley’s ex-boyfriend, Sam, surprises her with a pack of glow-in-the-dark condoms and is eager to use them because he “wanted to see that glowing going in and out of her.”  Sam’s “ghostly” member is the hit of the party.

To get the glow effect, you have to expose the condom to light for about 30 seconds or so, and the glow lasts for at least 15 minutes and up to an hour.  To recharge the glow, simply re-expose the condom to light (no need to take it off, either!).

Using colored or glow-in-the-dark condoms is a pleasant change to many people’s rather routine sex lives.  It’s just one of the many and varied ways I tried to make Hunter adventuresome and still safety conscious.

“Colorful” can have so many connotations!  Have fun and explore them all in 7 Days of Seduction.

Blurb: Ashley Thompson had a wild time at her party last Friday night. Maybe too wild. She wakes to find a video of her in the middle of a ménage a trois with her ex-boyfriend and a gorgeous stranger. Unable to remember anything about the night, other than the hot sex she sees on the computer screen, Ashley begins a search for Mr. Hunk. She has no luck until he unexpectedly shows up–in her shower.
Hunter Hopewell intends to introduce Ash to a variety of sexual experiences he finds fun and exciting. He proposes a week long series of “colorful” encounters designed to seduce Ashley out of her kink comfort zone.

As their week of escalating pleasure intensifies, Ashley must choose to let go of her inhibitions or risk losing the best damn lover she’s ever had.

The bathroom door opened and closed. Her hands froze.
"Damn it, Sam. Why is it every time I take a shower you have to pee? Couldn't you just hold it for once? Or pee in a cup, for God's sake?"
"I'm not Sam. And I don't have to pee."
Ashley's eyes popped open and the bottle of body wash hit the tub with a loud thunk. The husky voice she'd heard on yesterday's video and in this morning's dream was richer in person. Sexier. Her heart took off like a deer after a shotgun blast. She peered at the shower door, seeing only a shadowy figure through the opaque glass. Well thank, God, for that. He couldn't see her either.
"Hello? Are you there, Ash?" The amusement in his tone brought her back to earth.
"Yeah, I'm here. And just who the hell are you?"
"I'm Hunter Hopewell. Sorry we didn't really get introduced the other night."
"No shit." Damn. The all-important name meant nothing. The spray from the shower roared in her ears and Ashley took a step toward the shower door.
"So who are you? I mean, you say Hunter Hopewell, but I don't know you. And you know me."
"Yes, I do. I've never met you, but I've been interested in you for a while now."
Despite the hot water, chills raced over her body, standing her hair on end. Oh, my God. A stalker. I've attracted a stalker. And I'm shut in a bathroom with him. Suddenly, she couldn't breathe.
"You work over in English at the university." He knew where she worked. "And I've seen you around the campus." He'd been watching her.
She wrapped her arms around her chest, shielding her body as best she could. Maybe Sam would come in.
"You're a beautiful girl, Ashley. With lots of potential."
Potential for what? Needing to breathe or pass out, she gasped in air.
"I think you should leave." Where the balls came from to utter that sentence, she had no idea.
"Why?" His voice rose an octave.
"Because you're scaring the crap out of me."

Spotlight on Morrigan by Laura DeLuca

Blurb: Shuffled from place to place in the foster system, Morrigan doesn't know the meaning of home. Plus, she is different. She has power over fire, the ability to move objects with her mind, and glimpse into the future. Just when she believes her life can’t get any stranger, she discovers her true identity.

Filtiarn, a knight with a dark past and a surprising secret, has been tasked with guiding the heir of Tír Na NÓg through countless perils to be returned to her family. Once Morrigan has been reunited with her mother and grandmother, their triad can save the forgotten land of magic from being devoured by an ancient evil.

“Guardians!” A low snarl emanated from the back of his throat. “What are you doing with Guardians?”

“Stop it! Sit down!” Morrigan wasn’t sure who she was addressing, the man or the animals. Luckily, they both obeyed her command. She stepped in between them to avoid any further confrontations.

The cats took a seat on either side her legs, but their posture hardly relaxed. They still glared warily at the newcomer, even though their hisses died down to an occasional soft growl.

“Dirty, filthy beasts!” Tiarn snarled as he climbed to his feet. “I hate Guardians.”

“They’re just little cats,” Morrigan told him. “What’s the big deal?”

“Just cats! Hah!” He was standing at a careful distance, even though they had started licking their paws nonchalantly. “They are much more than simple cats! Though even those I find distasteful.”

Morrigan narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean?”

“Never mind. It does not matter.” Tiarn dismissed her question with a wave of his hand. “They are not coming with us."

“They most certainly are coming!”

Tiarn growled again. “I beg to differ with you, Your Highness. They would only get in the way. Possibly even get killed.”

Danu raised her head from her grooming to hiss at him again, as though she had taken that last statement as a personal threat. The strange reaction of her faithful sidekicks made Morrigan wonder again just how much Tiarn could be trusted. She also wondered why, when she wasn’t sure she could trust him, she still felt the undeniable urge to wrap her arms around his neck and kiss him. “If they stay here alone, they’ll definitely get killed or at least sent to the pound,” Morrigan told him. “I can’t let that happen. So, they’re coming. End of story.”

Tiarn’s eyes flashed dangerously, and he looked like he wanted to argue, but thought better of it. “Very well, Princess. Bring your mongrel felines. Just keep in mind that Guardians and lycans do not mix well.”

“Lycans?” Morrigan repeated. A sick feeling started to settle in her stomach, as the truth of his words sunk in. It all started to make sense—his hairy arms and chest, his reaction to the cats, even his earlier comment about smelling her out. Her dark knight had a much darker side than she had ever seen in her dreams.

“Why yes, Your Majesty. Did you not realize? You are a witch and a sorceress. And I, your faithful traveling companion, am a lycan—a werewolf.”

Interview with Jennifer Lowery

Today, I'm happy to have Jennifer Lowery join me to talk a bit about her new release, Hard Core. So welcome, Jennifer! Glad to have you here, chickie.

Hi Melissa and all you fabulous readers out there *waves* Thank you so much for having me today! My debut book, Hard Core, released last month so I’m very excited to be here! Thank you so much for sharing it with me!!

In honor of my release I am offering a copy of my debut contemporary suspense, Hard Core, in either ebook format or signed print copy to one lucky commenter so please leave me a comment with your EMAIL and gift choice to be entered to win!!

Well you heard that, folks. Be sure to comment with your email for a chance to win. :) So I'll start by asking you to tell the readers a bit about yourself.

I’m a wife of twenty years to a fabulous man and mother of three teenagers! We live in a small town in Michigan and love it. My son is in college, my daughter in high school and youngest daughter in middle school.

When and how did you get into writing? What inspires you to write?

I can’t remember wanting to be anything except a writer! I grew up devouring books, lol. Even got caught in the seventh grade reading a romance book in the back of my math book! I detoured along the way, went to college, got a degree in Respiratory Care, and worked in a hospital as a Respiratory Therapist for 13 years before the time felt right to pursue my career as a writer—my dream. So, I quit my job, thanks to my wonderful hubby who supported us on his income, and began writing full-time. It took me 10 years to become published (I wrote during my years at the hospital) and 3 years once I began writing full-time to sign a contract! So if you have a dream, don’t give up!! No matter how long it takes you to get there, don’t give up! Dreams really do come true! Make it happen!

Sounds like awesome words to live by! Now how did you come up with the idea for Hard Core?

Actually, the hero, Cristian, wouldn’t let me rest, lol! He demanded his story be told so I gave in and let him have his way. I’m so glad I did!

So what are you currently working on? Can we expect anymore books about any of Cristian’s “guy pals” from Hard Core? Any chance I might see a book about Mercer, at some point? Just saying. :) I like those silent, watchful types. *Le Sigh*

You are going to be so happy to hear this! I’m working on Mercer’s story as we speak!

Flip yeah, dude! I'll be waiting for that one. :) Can you share one of your favorite excerpts from Hard Core? And why is it your favorite?

Actually, the one I use for my blogs is my favorite. I love the dynamics between Cristian and Alana. He’s stubborn, but he’s met his match with her! I love her spunk and how she handles him.

Prepared to start an IV, she picked up a needle. She had it in position when his other arm shot out and he clamped her wrist in a bone-crushing grip. Startled, she met his panicked gaze.

“I said no needles.”
Her heart banged against her ribcage as she let the needle slip out of her hand. It hit the floor with a small ting. Alana opened her hands in surrender, her patient’s fingers digging into her flesh. For a man half-dead, he had amazing strength.
“Okay,” she said to placate him. “Relax, I don’t have it anymore. It’s your choice, but I recommend you let me start an IV for meds.”
“No. Just fix me.”
Alana pinned him with a no nonsense stare. “I’m not impressed with Superman heroics.”
Face pale and drawn, he said gruffly, “I’m not Superman. Learned not to trust people with needles.”
Her fingers were going numb. “If I remove the bullet without pain medication or anesthetic, you’re going to be sorry.”
He studied her. “You’re really a doctor?”
Alana bristled. “Technically, yes.”
She didn’t have time to explain herself with the amount of blood seeping from his gunshot wound. “I went to med school. You can let go of my arm now. I won’t use any needles.”
He looked down and immediately released his grip. She rubbed her wrist to soothe away the ache. “Can I get to work now, or do you want to question me more about my credentials while you bleed to death? I don’t have a blood bank, so you’re screwed if you lose too much.”
Her blunt statement received a curt nod. She normally didn’t talk to her patients like that. Her patients didn’t normally countermand her either.
“Do it,” he said.
“Without anesthetics?”
“I don’t need them. Just get it over with.”
Stubborn, stupid, or both? Insane, yes, but there wasn’t time to argue with him.
“Okay. The offer stands if you change your mind.”
“I won’t.”
She doubted that, but didn’t comment. Instead, wiped her forehead with her forearm, and picked up gauze pads to clean the wound.
“Here goes,” she warned and dabbed his skin.
Her patient didn’t move or even wince as she cleaned the angry wound. Either he had a will of steel or he’d passed out again. Hopefully, the latter. Sweat rolled down her back as she finished cleansing the area around the bullet entry. Red flesh puckered with the first signs of infection. In this environment infection was guaranteed.
With a steady hand that would have made her father proud, she picked up her instruments and took a deep breath.
“You still with me?”
He murmured a response, turning his head slightly so he could see her. The stark beauty of his profile, despite the bruises, struck her again. The lines of his face were chiseled, unforgiving. The kind of man she’d glance at twice if she passed him on the street.
A man associated with a criminal.
“Still here, Doc. What are you waiting for?” Husky with pain, his deep voice brought her out of her thoughts.
She gave herself a mental shake. “Want something to bite down on?”
A small, wry smile touched his lips and his lids closed. “You won’t hear a peep out of me. Just fix me, Doc.”
“I can hit you so you’ll sleep through it,” she muttered.
That drew a low chuckle from him. She didn’t expect him to have a sense of humor. He seemed too…hard. His chuckle turned into a grunt of pain. “You probably hit like a girl.”
Alana grinned. “Yes, I do. Rest assured it won’t feel like it.”
“Appreciate the offer, but, no.” His words slurred together, his muscles tense as he fought his body’s demands.
“You got a name, Superman?”
His head rolled to the side, his chest rose and fell slowly. She thought he was out but he murmured, “Cristian.”
“Nice to meet you, Cristian.”
Then she dug into the wound for the bullet.

Ha, what a great introduction to each other. So, I have to ask. I’ve read a few reviews where readers felt Cristian was a bit cold and unemotional. Personally, that worked for me since he was a mercenary after all. It was his job to be cold and detached. How did you think up the character of Cristian? And how did you decide which attributes to instill in him as your hero?

Ah, yes. Good question. Cristian came to me that way. I knew him before I starting writing him. The title Hard Core was meant for him. It is Cristian. He is a Hard Core mercenary. I actually had to soften his edges a little as I wrote him, much to his annoyance. He suffered many tragedies in his life and they hardened him. Everyone deals with tragedy differently. Cristian closed himself off. Hardened his heart. It’s who he is. I had to write him the way he is. I’m sorry if people found that off putting, but I write my characters as they are, not who I think they should be. My characters are very real to me. They react to their past, their present, and grow and change. I only hope I do mine justice. :)

Great answer, Jennifer. And I like Cristian's cold, detached manner. It does make him more realistic. So what sort of research did you do for Hard Core? I’m always interested about that with Military Romances because I know flip all about weapons. :)

The research is so much fun! I actually have a special forces contact that answers all my questions for me! He’s awesome!! And I inhale military books, both fiction and nonfiction. Documentaries. Love it. I think if I were dropped in the jungle I’d be able to survive for at least a week, lol!

Hmm perhaps I should get one of these 'special forces contacts'. :) What’s the most dangerous thing you’ve ever done in your life?

I’m an introvert who lives vicariously through her characters! I went clubbing in Mexico with a couple of my girlfriends on my senior class trip (we were supposed to be in our hotel room). That’s about as dangerous as my life has gotten, lol.

Ha, yes, well nothing too dangerous on my end either. At least not situations I've put myself in at any rate. Do you think you have what it takes to be cut out for life as a mercenary?

Hmmm…I don’t think so. Different circumstances, maybe. But, with my family and friends and career, no, I don’t think it would fit my lifestyle.

Lol, mine either. Do you know self-defense, in the event some baddie wants to take your kidney? Personally, I like to think of myself as a “ball buster”. Just putting that out there.

You know, I don’t know self-defense, but I just joined a gym that has MMA (I’m a huge UFC fan) and am considering MMA training. Not cage-fighting, but just training. How cool would that be? Got to get in shape first though :)

Ha! Awesome. I want to thank you for stopping by today, Jennifer. It was a pleasure to get to know you a bit better. As you know, I'll be waiting for Mercer's book. :)

Thank you for having me today, Melissa!! I just want to send out a big THANK YOU to all my readers out there! Without you I wouldn’t be here. My wish is to one day meet each and every one of you so I can personally thank you for your generosity and support!

Author Bio: Jennifer Lowery grew up reading romance novels in the back of her math book and on the bus to school, and never wanted to be anything but a writer.  Her summers were spent sitting at the kitchen table with her sisters spinning tales of romance and intrigue and always with a tall glass of ice tea at their side.

Today, Jennifer is living that dream and she couldn’t be happier to share her passion with her readers.  She loves everything there is about romance.  Her stories feature alpha heroes who meet their match with strong, independent heroines.  She believes that happily ever after is only the beginning of her stories. And the road to that happy ending is paved with action, adventure, and romance. As her characters find out when they face danger, overcome fears, and are forced to look deep within themselves to discover love.

Jennifer lives in Michigan with her husband and three children.  When she isn’t writing she enjoys reading and spending time with her family.

Blurb: He takes lives. She saves them.

A supposedly hassle-free job for mercenary Cristian Slade becomes a mission of mercy when he saves a life instead of taking one. Slade's new mission might be his most dangerous yet, because the danger is to his heart.

Tragedy has sent esteemed surgeon Alana O'Grady to a remote a remote Nicaraguan island where she immerses herself in the lives of a native American tribe, using her talents for goodwill instead of wealth and prestige. But life turns upside down when her work requires she protect a rugged mercenary who commands her attention when she's awake and dominates her dreams while she sleeps.

Doctoring Cristian puts her entire tribe in danger from the man who's hunting him. Is it her professional oath or her unprofessional attraction to him keeping her from sending him away to heal on his own? Alana's fire warms Cristian's heart, but he's a hardened assassin and has no business falling for someone like her. Can they fight hard enough to keep what they might have together?

Content Warning: Sexual content.

Review: So I waited for this book's release for a while. And once I picked up my copy and read it, I have to say I honestly really enjoyed it.

While I read some reviews that some readers didn't care for Cristian's cold, detached demeanor, it worked for me. Mainly because that's precisely what his character was supposed to be. An unemotional mercenary focused on getting the job done, despite injuries and attractive doctors in the jungle. I mean, it's not like he's popping over for a cup of tea, is it?

Cristian's character felt more natural and realistic to real life in my opinion. He's not sappy and rarely do you see him acting sappy in the book, if any. But, like I said, it worked for me. Coupled with Alana's nurturing nature, I like these two characters paired together. Even the "intimate" scenes were good, too. I don't have to have super steamy bedroom scenes to make or break a book for me. As long as the story is engrossing and sucks me in, then I'm a happy camper. As was much the case with Hard Core.

In my opinion, the story was well written and grabbed my attention from the very start. I ended up reading it in one sitting and was satisfied when it did come to a close. I immediately felt like I wanted to learn more about some of the secondary characters. *cough* Mercer. And lo and behold, I will get to read his book soon.

All in all, I thought it was a great "special ops" romance. And I look forward to reading more about Cristian's team mates.

Spotlight on Blood Moon by Andrew P. Weston

Special Forces v Nightmares Come To Life

Blurb: Once every few hundred years a Blood-Moon rises on an unsuspecting world, and when it does, the very stuff of myth and legend comes to life.

What do you think might happen when nightmare becomes reality? What do you think might happen when an ancient horror comes face to face with some of the most highly trained soldiers in the modern world, and one of the harshest environments known to man is turned into a battleground?

Discover the terrifying reality for yourself in…Blood-Moon.

I saw Paxton fall, one cat having its jaws firmly clamped around his neck, the other, working with it, holding onto his ankle. He didn’t go down without a fight and managed to drill the one on his foot through the skull, before his neck snapped. I was just about to empty my magazine into the remaining jaguars, when I saw the one Paxton had shot through the head twitch and start to rise off the ground. What the fuck!

The other two cats were almost upon me, so I reacted instinctively. Using my momentum, I bunched my muscles and launched myself out from the rocks, knowing full well the areas closer to the ravine wall would be the most dangerous.

I fell for what seemed an eternity, only to have the wind knocked out of me as I hit the water hard. Coughing and spluttering, I broke the surface and looked back up toward the ridge. A blood-moon was beginning to rise, and by its light I saw five silhouettes peering over the top of the ledge, growling to each other as if they were having a conversation. I couldn’t make out their eyes, but I knew each one of them was looking directly at me–even the one that had been shot in the head!

For some reason, that sent a shiver all the way down my spine and into my boots. Striking out for the opposite shore, I decided to put as much distance between the jaguars and myself as possible. I’d lost my machine gun in the pool, but the pistol was still thankfully secure in my shoulder holster. Patting my hip, I also confirmed my ka-bar was still there. With one last look at the eerie crazy-gang, I ran in the opposite direction, determined to put as much distance as possible between them and me. Needless to say, I quickly lost my sense of direction. I can honestly say I didn’t give a shit!

Autumn's Harvest Blog Hop

Fancy seeing you kids here again! Hope everyone is having a good time hopping around from blog to blog. So our subject for this hop is AUTUMN.

And I do believe I'm going to keep this short and simple. The short of it is, I love Autumn! Living along the Gulf Coast, the humidity makes it feel like Satan's breeding grounds 80% of the year. Lower temperatures and less humidity are things I look forward to each year. I like to think of myself as a polar bear. My abundance of stored body fat serves me just fine in cooler climates. Just saying.

Plus, once Autumn arrives, Christmas is just around the corner. And that's my favorite holiday! Apparently, it's my kitty's too. :)

Hmm.. Instead of asking what you love about Autumn, because I'll assume you love it as much as I do, perhaps you can tell me a really great book you've read lately. I'm always on the hunt for new books and I'm open to recommendations. :)

Now for prize details - On my blog I'll be giving away a $10 Amazon Gift Card. I'll use to select one commenter. Be sure to include your email address so I can contact you later. :)

You'll also be entering for the Autumn's Harvest Blog Hop Grand Prizes when you comment. No email = no entry. Bear that in mind, kiddos.

The prizes are:
1st Grand Prize: A Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet
2nd Grand Prize: A $50 Amazon or B&N Gift Card
3rd Grand Prize: A Swag Pack that contains 10+ paperbacks, ebooks, 50+ bookmarks, cover flats, magnets, pens, coffee cozies, and more! (3rd prize is only open to US entries)

You as a reader can go to EACH blog and comment with your email address and be entered to win. Yep, you can enter over 200 times! Continue hopping along with the links posted below.

Happy Autumn! Have fun and good luck!! :)
